For the last few years, an after-school program was launched for those sixth grade students whose passion is writing. The Writer's Salon begins in October and lasts through April. We meet on the first and third Tuesdays of each of those months.
The purpose of the Writer's Salon is to explore the various forms of writing. Students will be able to demonstrate their talent for expressive writing in a relaxed and joyful atmosphere. The Writer's Salon is designed after the Ancient Greek Symposiums and the 19th century Parisian artist salons, where writers share ideas and read their writings to each other, discussing struggles and accomplishments.
The goals of the Writer's Salon are to enhance writing abilities, encourage life-long learning and writing, while comprehending the writing process in-depth, and working at a pace that is in concert with the developmental level of the middle school child.
Students have opportunities to write in forms and choose topics that please their sensibilities, enjoying their successes while empowering them with writing skills. The hope is to facilitate an explosion of language that pleases the brain and being of the writer, as well as the reader. Each student will begin to develop his or her own "lively style of writing."
