St. Eugene’s Cathedral School is a community of faith built on the values, beliefs, and traditions of Catholic education. There are celebrations and opportunities throughout the year aimed at fostering the spiritual development of our students and the entire community. The students receive the Sacrament of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion in second grade and Confirmation in seventh grade.

Sacramental Preparation

Our second graders are prepared for the reception of the sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Communion. The reception of First Reconciliation usually occurs in December or January, and the students receive their First Holy Communion in May.

Our Seventh graders are prepared for the Sacrament of Confirmation in the seventh grade. The students receive the sacrament in the spring.

Additionally, all students in grades 2 - 8 are given the opportunity to receive the sacrament of reconciliation on a monthly basis.

School Masses

School Masses are celebrated every week, in addition to Holy Days, with all grades in attendance. The junior high students serve as lectors and altar servers. We have a school choir, which sings at all of the school Masses.

School Traditions

  • Special prayer services are celebrated at various times throughout the school year. These are usually celebrated around the feast days of the Church and the liturgical seasons of Advent and Lent. Some examples are:

    • Feast of Saint Francis

    • Stations of the Cross

    • May Crowning

  • St. Eugene’s School has a prayer partner program that is enjoyed by all students. Our older students are paired up with the younger students in an effort to build a community or family atmosphere at the school. The eighth graders have kindergarten prayer partners, the seventh graders have first grade prayer partners, the sixth graders have second grade prayer partners, the fifth graders have fourth grade prayer partners, and the third graders have preschool prayer partners. Teachers arrange days when prayer partners share special classroom activities together. Prayer partners often pray for one another and remember each other on special occasions. They thoroughly enjoy each other’s friendship.

  • Each year, Catholic schools throughout the nation set aside a week to celebrate their continued excellence and proud tradition of education. This week is usually celebrated the last week of January and/or early February. There is a national theme for each school to foster at the local level. Activities are planned for the students, teachers and parents during this special week to remember and celebrate the many years of proud service and heritage of our Catholic schools. Parents are alerted to these activities well in advance by receiving a special invitation to events such as Open House and special assemblies.

    Catholic Schools Week traditionally includes:

    • Parish Mass

    • Career Day

    • Grandparents Day

    • Spirit Days (such as crazy hair day, R&R day, sports day, etc)

    • Sports Rally

    • Teacher Appreciation

    • 8th Grade Pancake Breakfast

    • School Open House

  • An annual Advent program is held in December of each year. The purpose of this program is to bring St. Eugene’s parents and students together in song and prayer to celebrate the joy and happiness of the Christmas season. Our choir is showcased at the Advent Program.
